CHS bulletin publishes update on Caliva Smart's book project Nov 23, 2024 | Dr. Kathryn Caliva Smart, assistant professor of History, spent a portion of last summer at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C., working on her current book project: "Speaking about Gods: Mythic Knowledge and Narrative Authority in Greek Lyric Poetry." The CHS is a research institute under the auspices of Harvard University that supports research on all aspects of ancient Greece. Caliva Smart's term as a Hellenic studies fellow at the center continues through May 2025.

Gan presents at Concerned Philosophers for Peace meeting Nov 23, 2024 | Dr. Barry L. Gan, professor emeritus of Philosophy, presented via Zoom a paper at the annual meeting of Concerned Philosophers for Peace in Birmingham, Alabama, on Oct. 18.

Laugh with ‘Vickie & Nickie's Holiday Sleigh Ride’ at SBU Nov 20, 2024 | The musical-comedy sister duo Vickie & Nickie bring their seasonal show “Vickie & Nickie’s Holiday Sleigh Ride” to St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.

Calabria presents remotely to conference in Izbekistan Nov 8, 2024 | Fr. Michael D. Calabria, O.F.M., Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Center for Arab & Islamic Studies, presented via Zoom at the 6th International Ebu’l-Hasan Kharkani Symposium, held at Oriental University, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Nov. 1.

Smith co-edits works, publishes chapter, and presents paper Nov 8, 2024 | Dr. Caitlin Smith, assistant professor of English, has co-edited with Jan Stievermann and Eddie Glaude Jr. two final manuscripts accepted for publication in spring 2025 by Oxford University Press. Smith also published a chapter in “The Routledge Companion to Herman Melville,” and presented a paper at a conference at Catholic University.

Pitt presents at New England history conference in Boston Nov 8, 2024 | Dr. Steven Pitt, associate professor of History, presented a chapter titled "God's Paradox: Boston's Maritime World in the Seventeenth Century" at the New England Historical Association conference in Boston, Massachusetts, on Oct. 26.

Foerst gives lecture, meets with students at Butler University Nov 8, 2024 | Dr. Anne Foerst, professor of Computer Science, gave a lecture titled "Large Language Models: Theological Implications" at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Work by Simpson and two others accepted for publication Nov 8, 2024 | Dr. Scott Simpson, professor of Chemistry, Kate Merkel, 2022 SBU Chemistry graduate, and Dr. Alyssa Santos, former postdoctoral researcher in the Simpson Research group, have had their publication "Trigonal Bipyramidal or Square Planar? Density Functional Theory calculations of iron bis(dithiolene) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes" accepted for publication in the Royal Chemical Society's journal Dalton Transactions.

Simpson presents work at conference in the Netherlands Nov 8, 2024 | Dr. Scott Simpson, professor of Chemistry and Honors Program chair, presented his work titled "Understanding the Bonding of N-heterocyclic Carbenes on Pd/Cu(111) Single Atom Alloys" at the 4th European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (CBOND2024), held at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Location change for New York Theatre Ballet masterclass at SBU Nov 7, 2024 | The masterclasses offered by The New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) originally scheduled for Butler Hall will now be held Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Sandra A. and William L. Richter Center multipurpose room on the St. Bonaventure University campus.

CS researcher to discuss impact of machine learning and AI at SBU Nov 1, 2024 | St. Bonaventure University will host computer science researcher Sai Suman for a conversation and question-and-answer session on working with machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) models.

New York Theatre Ballet to perform at SBU’s Quick Center Nov 1, 2024 | The New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB), an acclaimed chamber-size ensemble in the world of dance, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

SBU Theater presents ‘After the Revolution’ Nov. 6-9 Oct 31, 2024 | SBU Theater, the theater program at St. Bonaventure University, opens its season next week with the production of Amy Herzog’s “After the Revolution.” The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6-9 at the university’s Garret Theater on campus.

Michael Calabria, associate professor of World Languages and Cultural Studies and director of the Center for Arab & Islamic Studies, made two presentations at the Franciscan Formation Course on Ecumenical and Interreligious Dialogue, held in Istanbul, Turkey, Oct. 13-26.
