Belfield contributes to ‘New Cambridge Companion on Christology’

Oct 08, 2025

“The Cambridge Companion to Christology,” including a chapter written by Dr. Andrew Gertner Belfield, assistant professor of Theology & Franciscan Studies, was published in September.

Andrew BelfieldThis volume features contributions from scholars around the world taking up issues pertaining to the sources of christological thinking in biblical texts and the early history of Christianity, the receptions of these sources in various historical moments and by various traditions (including non-Christian traditions), and contemporary christological discussions.

Belfield’s contribution discusses christological developments during the medieval period. That chapter focuses especially on how theologians in the early European universities treated the union of natures in Christ, a growing interest in and analysis of Christ’s humanity, and the christological work done outside medieval universities among vernacular and visionary theologians.
