Middle school students compete in regional MATHCOUNTS phase at St. Bonaventure

On Feb. 18, St. Bonaventure University hosted the regional phase of the 2023 MATHCOUNTS competition, a national contest for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students. 

Contestants worked individually and in four-person school teams on questions designed by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the main sponsoring organization.

Students participated from the following schools (with their coaches): Allegany-Limestone Middle School (Kathy Stamets), Clarence Middle School and Nichols School (Finn Goehrig).

The top school team and the top individuals received trophies. The top individuals also received scholarships to St. Bonaventure University. The teams have been invited to the New York state competition to be held in March in Saratoga Springs, New York. The top individuals from the state contest will advance to the national competition in May.

The top individuals were: first place, Michael-Daniel Giglio of Clarence Middle School; second place, Evan Liao-Cheng of Nichols Middle School; and third place, Sushanth Kondur of Allegany-Limestone Middle School.

Allegany-Limestone Middle School had the top team composed of students Sushanth Kondur, Eshnika Patra, Michael Questa, and Aubrianna St. Clair.

In addition to NSPE, other organizations providing financial support for the contest at the national level include Art of Problem Solving, CNA Foundation, Northrup Grumman Foundation, Raytheon Company, Texas Instruments, 3M Foundation, U.S. Department of Defense, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and BAE Systems. Locally the contest was financially supported by St. Bonaventure and an anonymous grant.
