Article by Bopp examines data measurement on homelessness

Jan 26, 2023

An article by Dr. Chris Bopp, assistant professor of computer science, along with a collaborator at the University of Colorado Boulder, will be published in the journal series Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction.

The article, titled “Showing the Context: A Need for Oligopticonic Information Systems in Homelessness Measurement," will appear in the April 2023 issue for Computer-Supported Cooperative Work.

Bopp will present the results of this research at the 26th ACM Conference On Computer-Supported Cooperative Work And Social Computing (CSCW), to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in October. The CSCW is the premier international venue for research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities, and networks.

The research brought together various stakeholders in the area of homelessness services to better understand the types and uses of data collected from and about people experiencing homelessness. The research finds that while there are many important uses for collected data, the preference for numeric data means that many stakeholders' voices are not heard.

An alternative approach, proposed in the article, suggests that the oligopticon model provides the ability to not only better represent all stakeholders, but to also provide a needed level of privacy.
