The New York College English Association will hold its annual conference at St. Bonaventure University on Oct. 18-19.

NYCEA is one of the most active regional affiliates of the College English Association.

CEA enjoys a reputation as “a vibrant, growing professional organization of scholar-teachers who regard teaching college students, undergraduate and graduate, as the proper focus of the profession.”

Twenty college and university teachers and scholars from across New York state and northwest Pennsylvania will present papers reflecting current trends in literature, writing, and pedagogy. 

The NYCEA board of directors, including SBU’s Dr. John Mulryan, professor emeritus of English, and Dr. Lauren Matz, professor of English, will hold their annual meeting during the conference.

St. Bonaventure alumni presenters include Dr. Catherine Waitinas, ’96, ’98, Dr. Scott O’Neil, Dr. Travis Matteson, Chernice Miller, ’16, ’18, Marie Rankin, Danielle Frownfelter Michel, ’08, ’10; and Catherine Kula, ’08, ’10.

O’Neil, ’11, Matteson, ’11, and Rankin, ’18, earned master’s degrees in English at St. Bonaventure.

Waitinas, professor of English at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, will deliver the keynote presentation — “The Walt Whitman Video Series: Digital Humanities, Student Creators, and Literary Pedagogy” — from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Saturday at the Cutco Executive Lecture Room (Swan Center 209).

The conference is sponsored by NYCEA, SBU’s Department of English, and a Keenan grant awarded by St. Bonaventure University. The university last hosted the conference in 2008.

Members of the SBU community and public who wish to register for the conference may do so at www.nycea.org until Oct. 10.  Dr. Waitinas’ keynote lecture on Saturday is free and open to the public, but registration is required for all other conference activities.
