Professors teach courses at Chautauqua Institution

Sep 10, 2019
Dr. David Matz, professor and department chair of Classics, and Dr. Lauren Matz, professor of English, taught courses in July in the Chautauqua Institution's Special Studies program.

David Matz's course in “Baseball Analytics: New and Not So New” inspired enthusiastic discussions of phenomena like launch angles, exit velocities, spin rates, on-base plus slugging percentages, and wins above replacement.

Lauren Matz's students in "Spellbinding Spelling and Vivid Vocabulary" savored the etymology of the word "jinx,” determined when "struthious" is exactly the right adjective, and learned why the “i before e” rule doesn’t apply to “cuneiform” and “hacienda.”
