U.S. News: SBU faculty get high marks for teaching excellence

    Sep 23, 2025, 16:36 by Thomas Missel
St. Bonaventure University’s faculty received high marks in the latest U.S. News & World Report college rankings.

St. Bonaventure University’s faculty received high marks in the latest U.S. News & World Report college rankings.

The school is ranked 10th for Best Undergraduate Teaching out of 164 regional universities in the North, an 11-state region from Maryland to Maine. The 2026 U.S. News rankings were released today.

In the spring and summer of 2025, U.S. News asked top academics to name the schools they believe have faculty with a remarkably strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.

The rankings focus on schools whose faculty and administrators are committed to teaching undergraduate students in a high-quality manner.

“It’s gratifying to see U.S. News formally recognize what I’ve known all along — that we have remarkably committed faculty in all five of our schools,” said Dr. David Hilmey, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “Having a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio in our classrooms certainly helps, but that only matters if the person standing at the front of the classroom genuinely cares about their students’ academic success.”

The U.S. News list of regional universities in the North includes colleges that offer a full range of master’s degree programs.

St. Bonaventure has five academic schools — Arts & Sciences, Business, Communication, Education and Health Professions — and almost 180 full-time faculty, 75% of whom have terminal degrees in their fields.
