SBU wins regional title to advance to national club softball tourney
Thanks to a dominating performance in the North Atlantic Regional tournament, St. Bonaventure’s club softball team is headed to the National Club Softball Association World Series May 15-18 in Georgia.
The Bonnies (16-2) defeated The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), 13-5, and Millersville, 9-6, last weekend in Danville, Pennsylvania, to reach the title game, and then thumped TCNJ again, 10-1, to win the crown. TCNJ worked its way back to the title game through the consolation bracket.
The Bonnies, who went 13-2 in the regular season to win the North Atlantic North division, are seeded 8th in the 16-team national tournament. They open play in Pool A at noon Thursday, May 15, vs. No. 16 Ohio University. Top-seeded Michigan and No. 9 Florida State are also in Pool A.
This is the second year in a row the Bonnies have won the league title, but the first time they’ve advanced to nationals.
“I think we’ve been successful because of the relationship we all have, as well as the love for the game that everyone exhibits,” said Lexi Swan, team captain. “We are able to have fun no matter what, all while striving for excellence in the process. I’m extremely proud of everyone for the efforts they’ve put in throughout the year as well as at regionals.
“We truly have a special team and have so much fun together. We are beyond grateful and excited to represent St. Bonaventure at the national level,” Swan said.
After pool play on Thursday and Friday morning, all teams will be reseeded based on their pool play performance, which will include winning percentage, head-to-head within pool play, run differential, and seeding to begin pool play.
All teams are then placed into a double-elimination tournament that will run May 16-18, with the winners’ bracket champion meeting the winner of the losers’ bracket at 4:45 p.m. Sunday; a second game will be played if the losers’ bracket champion wins the 4:45 p.m. game.
