Seven SBU students inducted into National Spanish Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi

May 5, 2023

Seven St. Bonaventure University students were inducted into the Xi Delta Chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi.

The induction was held May 2 and was conducted by the chapter adviser, Dr. Leigh A. Simone, assistant professor of world languages and cultural studies

New members of Sigma Delta Pi are Olivia Moon, a health science major from Perry, Ohio; Morgan E. Pierce, a biology major from Oneonta, New York; Carter D. Black, an adolescence education major with a Spanish concentration from Pittsford, New York; Brooke E. Bobbey, a health and society major from Youngstown, Ohio; Natalie C. Merrill, a history major from Buffalo, New York; Angela G. LaGrou, a behavioral neuroscience major from Marilla, New York; and Patrick Scott, a criminology major from Lancaster, New York.

Current members in attendance were Dr. Alva V. Cellini and Grace Metz.

Founded in 1919, Sigma Delta Pi is the largest international foreign language society in the world with more than 540 chapters and the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities.

The mission of the honor society is to honor those who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples; to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture; and to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech.
