A book project by Dr. Christopher D. Stanley, professor of theology and Franciscan studies, has been accepted for publication by Bloomsbury, one of the world's leading publishing houses.
The book, which is still being written, will appear in the Library of New Testament Studies series.
Titled "Paul and Asklepios: The Greco-Roman Quest for Healing and the Mission of Paul," the project explores the complex interplay of folk, medical, and religious modes of healing in the Greco-Roman world as a backdrop for analyzing early Christian views and practices relating to sickness and healing.
Portions of the study were presented at conferences in Pretoria, South Africa; Trivandrum, India; and San Diego, California. An early version of the analysis was published last year in the Journal for the Study of the New Testament, a leading journal in the field.
