St. Bonaventure Reading Center offering summer reading program for Olean-area K-12 students

May 11, 2021

The St. Bonaventure University Reading Center is offering a summer “Fall in Love With Reading” program for K-12 students in the Olean area.

The program, which runs from July 6 through Aug. 19 and features twice-a-week sessions, will be held at Archbishop Walsh Academy/Southern Tier Catholic School on West State Street in Olean, a short distance from the SBU campus. The cost is $100 per child.

Space is very limited and students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration deadline is June 1.

Participants will work individually or in pairs with literacy specialist-teachers in 90-minute sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first session begins on Tuesday, July 6, and the last session is on Thursday, Aug. 19. Parents may register their child for one of four time slots: 8-9:30 a.m., 9:30-11 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., or 1-2:30 p.m.

The first two meetings are diagnostic sessions, followed by 12 teaching sessions and a closing ceremony.

Parents must commit to the full program and attendance is mandatory as the hours are needed in order for program teachers to meet New York state certification requirements.

“This is an exceptional opportunity for a child to get individualized attention and to experience the joy of reading,” said Dr. Sheri Voss, visiting professor in the School of Education at St. Bonaventure and director of its graduate program in B-12 literacy.

“The Reading Center is designed to discover a child’s reading skills and build upon those strengths to foster a love for reading,” said Voss. “We help a child gain strategies in many pillars of reading including such things as phonics and word attack strategies, vocabulary building, fluency, and comprehension.”

To register a child for the program, visit the SBU Reading Center website at www.sbu.edu/learningtoread. Once your registration is received you will be emailed a confirmation letter, information forms, and instructions for paying the tuition, which must be paid before the July 6 start date to secure your spot.

If you have questions or would like more information about the program, contact Voss at (716) 375-2368 or by email at svoss@sbu.edu.
