Mathematics Department hosts MAA Seaway Section meeting

Nov 03, 2023 Seaway Meeting at SBU Fall 2023

The Department of Mathematics hosted the fall 2023 meeting of the Mathematical Association of America Seaway Section. The conference ran Oct. 13 and 14.
The event brought together nearly 60 mathematics faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and professionals from more than 20 schools and organizations.
Following the Friday evening banquet, Dr. Hossein Shahmohamad of Rochester Institute of Technology gave an informative and immensely entertaining talk on “Graphs and Their Potent Energy.” Shahmohamad’s visit was supported by the SBU Visiting Scholars Committee. After the banquet talk, students competed in math trivia games organized by Dr. Ryan Gantner of St. John Fisher University.
The conference continued on Saturday with numerous talks and a student poster session, offering a fascinating cross-section of mathematical topics. The local organizers of the meeting were Dr. Maureen Cox, associate professor of mathematics; Dr. Chris Hill, assistant professor and department chair; and Dr. Christine Uhl, associate professor of mathematics.
St. Bonaventure last hosted a meeting of the Seaway Section in the fall of 2011. The Mathematical Association of America is the world’s largest organization dedicated to undergraduate mathematics instruction. In the United States and Canada, the MAA comprises 29 sections. St. Bonaventure is part of the Seaway Section, which includes portions of New York, Ontario, and Quebec.
