SBU, Ohio University create chemistry Ph.D. pathway
Chemistry majors at St. Bonaventure University now have a fourth pathway into a doctoral chemistry program upon graduation from SBU.

An articulation agreement between St. Bonaventure and Ohio University provides a direct application pathway for SBU students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry to Ohio University’s Ph.D. program in Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Under the agreement, which takes effect July 1, SBU Chemistry graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.5 will be eligible to apply directly to the doctoral program. Ohio University, located in Athens, Ohio, will offer admission annually to a minimum of two qualified SBU students who meet the eligibility and application requirements. If more than two qualified students apply, selection will be made by the Graduate Recruitment Committee in Ohio University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
St. Bonaventure has similar articulation agreements with Ph.D. programs in chemistry at the University at Buffalo, the University of Rhode Island and North Dakota State University.
“This agreement with Ohio University gives our students another outstanding opportunity to pursue advanced study in chemistry and biochemistry,” said Dr. Scott Simpson, professor of Chemistry and chair of St. Bonaventure’s Department of Chemistry. “Graduate programs continue to recognize the strength of an SBU chemistry education, including our rigorous curriculum, close faculty-student mentoring, and the hands-on research and instrumentation experiences our students receive.”

Ohio University’s chemistry doctoral program spans the five traditional disciplines of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry. The program emphasizes original chemical research and includes faculty research strengths in areas such as chemometrics, forensic chemistry, mass spectrometry, medicinal chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, materials chemistry, nanoscience and nanomedicine, nucleic acid research, protein and glycoprotein engineering, and spectroscopy.
Students admitted to Ohio University’s Ph.D. program are eligible for full-year financial support, including a tuition waiver. The university also offers teaching assistantship stipends, fellowship opportunities for highly qualified students and research assistantships through individual research groups. The agreement provides SBU students with a clearer path from undergraduate study into a fully funded doctoral program.
“Our goal is to give chemistry students every possible advantage as they plan for their future,” Simpson said. “Agreements like this create secure, well-defined pathways for students who want to continue into high-level research careers. It is also a strong endorsement of the preparation our students receive at St. Bonaventure.”
