Journal publishes Simpson's research on hydrogen storage

May 13, 2021

A manuscript by Dr. Scott Simpson, assistant professor of chemistry, has been published in The Journal of Colloid and Interface Science Open, the open-access journal published by Elsevier, a Netherlands-based publishing company specializing in scientific, technical, and medical content.

The manuscript is titled "The Search for Molecular Corks Beyond Carbon Monoxide: A Quantum Mechanical Study of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adsorption on Pd/Cu(111) and Pt/Cu(111) Single Atom Alloys."

The focus of this research is utilizing a chemical phenomena known as the "molecular corking effect" to store/release hydrogen. Hydrogen storage is a key enabling technology for the advancement of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to combat the global energy crisis.
