Dr. Scott Simpson, assistant professor of chemistry, along with Jonathan P. Antle, undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry, and SBU graduate Paul Vexelman, had their work involving the identification of emerging per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials.
These compounds are a group of man-made chemicals that are very persistent in the environment and in the human body, hence being commonly referred to as "forever compounds." There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human effects.
