Dec 12, 2019

Former St. Bonaventure University rugby star Eamonn Matthews has signed a contract with Rugby ATL, the expansion Major League Rugby team in Atlanta.

The former captain of the Bonnies graduated in May with a degree in finance and a minor in economics.

About to enter its third season of play, Major League Rugby has 12 teams divided into six-team Eastern and Western conferences. The regular season schedule runs from Feb. 8 through May 31.

After graduation, Matthews joined 404 Rugby ATL, Rugby ATL’s Southeastern Regional Development Team. He played with the team during the fall 2019 American Rugby Premiership.

A scrum half from Jersey City, New Jersey, Matthews was a finalist for the Rudy Scholz Award, given annually to the nation’s best Division 1A men’s rugby player.

Last December, Matthews was named Most Valuable Player of Rugby East. The Bonnies finished that fall season ranked 12th in the nation.
