SBU’s ‘Jazz ’n’ Wings’ concert April 23 to feature 18 students

The St. Bonaventure University Jazz Band will present its annual “Jazz ’n’ Wings” performance from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in The Rathskeller on campus.

The hourlong concert will feature a lively program of Big Band jazz alongside complimentary chicken wings provided by the Provost’s Office. The event is free and open to the public.

Directed by Dr. Les Sabina, professor of Music, the ensemble will perform selections by renowned jazz composers including Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Oliver Nelson, Joe Henderson and Cannonball Adderley.

The performance will spotlight several student soloists, including Cameron Heinig on alto saxophone, Jack Haskell on tenor saxophone, Mathew Bokman on baritone saxophone, and trumpeters Robert Wilkinson and Holden Turek.

The SBU Jazz Band includes students from across the university. The saxophone section features Heinig, Haskell, Bokman, Lauren Burts, Kierra Bechard, and Alhanna Gabel. Maddalena Masciale-Walmer and Sophia Manzella perform on clarinet, while Maeve Wheeler plays flute.

The trumpet section includes Turek, Robert Wilkinson, Allison McCoy and Lilly Goodman. Trombones are performed by Max DeMass and Dominik Vaughan. The rhythm section features Ethan Baxter on guitar, Vincent Del Vento on percussion and Sean Wallace on drums. Sabina also performs on bass.

Special guest artists will join the ensemble for the performance, including Dr. Cyril Bodnar, adjunct instructor of Music, on trumpet, and Dr. Brian Stevens, lecturer of Music, on piano.
