Dr. Chris Mackowski, professor in the Jandoli School of Communication, was honored Feb. 9 by the Raleigh (N.C.) Civil War Roundtable as this year’s recipient of the T. Harry Gatton Award. Presented annually since 2008, the award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the understanding of and appreciation for the American Civil War.

Gatton (1918–2001) served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. A former newspaper editor and radio station director, he also served as executive secretary to U.S. Senator Sam J. Ervin and as chair of the North Carolina Historical Commission.
