I might best describe my teaching philosophy with a line from The King and I: “…by your students you’ll be taught.” That is not to say that I am indulgent —  rather that I listen to my students’ comments and I read their work to determine whether they are learning and performing according to expectations.

If some tried-and-true method does not seem to be working, I reevaluate it, revise it or develop something that works better. Though I have my testy moments, by and large I tend to have a lot of patience and to make time for my students. 

I am working on a book about Sidney Dorfman, founder and longtime president of Dorf Feature Service, a newsman and entrepreneur well known for his writing abilities and for fostering the careers of many New Jersey writers.

I am the oldest of 12 children. I have been teaching and editing in one way or another my entire life.
