As a professional school counselor, licensed professional counselor and nationally certified counselor, I have been privileged to serve in a variety of settings, with a diverse array of clients with varying educational and therapeutic needs. Throughout the last 10+ years, the focus of my work has primarily centered on vulnerable and under-served populations.
I have served as a school counselor/field placement supervisor at the secondary school level, as well as served in alternative placements such as an adult education center and public charter school. I have also served as a student affairs professional at both private and public universities.
Currently, in addition to my work as a counselor educator, I serve as a clinical practitioner in the private practice setting and frequently partner with key stakeholders to provide relevant, culturally responsive solutions and professional development opportunities.
My teaching philosophy is experiential and reflective in nature. I believe in the transformative power of educational experiences. In my classroom, I promote learning by providing structure and meaningful experiences. I cultivate an environment conducive for growth and learning by igniting curiosity and encouraging experimentation.
Students are invited and expected to actively engage in a continuum of experiences designed to extend their learning beyond the written material and a baseline understanding of terms and concepts. I value and prioritize diversity, not only in instructional practices but in students’ backgrounds, perspectives and needs.
It is my goal to help emerging counselors develop a solid counselor identity, expose them to culturally relevant pedagogy and teach them to create, consume and utilize research in a manner that best serves their clients and communities.
My research interests include the use of solution-focused brief therapy techniques as an intervention for students returning to comprehensive schools after a disciplinary alternative school placement, school counselor supervision and enhancing equity and inclusion in the classroom and in the field.
