Dr. Heidi L. Henry, assistant professor of Counselor Education, co-authored an article titled "The Power of Choice: Comparing Asynchronous and Synchronous Learning" that was published in the Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision, a peer-reviewed academic journal.
Co-authors include SBU alumni Kayla Newkirk, who earned an MSED in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2023, and Lauren Guggenberger, who received an MSED in School Counseling in 2024.
The study, supported by an SBU Keenan grant, used the explanatory sequential mixed-methods design and explored counseling students' outcomes and attitudes toward asynchronous versus synchronous learning, finding no significant differences in final project scores between the two modalities.
Analysis of open-ended survey responses revealed that students preferred synchronous learning for increased engagement but faced challenges such as time constraints, social burnout, and anxiety with both learning types.
