Jandoli School of Communication to welcome more than 200 high school students to annual CommDay

Oct 15, 2019

The Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University will welcome students from 17 high schools to its annual Communications Day (CommDay) on Friday, Oct. 18.

CommDay creates the opportunity for high school students to come to campus and learn about the aspects of the broad field of communications. These students can explore what it’s like to be a broadcaster or reporter, the digital side of communications, the world of public relations and more.

The event will feature 10 interactive workshops, a keynote address by ESPN’s Sr. NBA insider and 1991 St. Bonaventure graduate Adrian Wojnarowski, and an optional CommPetition in which school teams will create a compelling video, series of photos or feature/news articles addressing the CommDay 2019 topic,  “Creating a United State of Media: Using Media to Unite in Divided Times.”

The interactive workshops will touch on various topics in the communications field and are a great way to show and teach students about the vast career choices. Jandoli School faculty will be joined by several St. Bonaventure alumni to offer the following workshops:

  • “The Magic of Marketing Communications” by Mike Jones-Kelly
  • “Take The Time to Take the Walk: The Best Advice on Writing” by Dr. Chris Mackowski
  • “Turn Your Love of Instagram, Snapchat, or YouTube Into a Digital Marketing Career” by Shelley Jack
  • “What It Takes to Broadcast Sports” by Rick Karnath
  • “Creating #WOJBOMBS” by Adrian Wojnarowski
  • “Social Media Is Not Just Random Posts: Tik Tok on the Clock - #AREYOUIN” by Dr. William Northington
  • “Interactive Reporting Exercise Involving the 2020 Presidential Election” By Dr. Rich Lee
  • “Top Tips For Great Video” by Mike Spong
  • “Breaking News: How Investigative Reporting Happens” by Charlie Specht
  • “Live SBU-TV Newscast Experience” by Anna Bulszewicz

This year’s main topic of “Creating a United State of Media: Using Media to Unite in Divided Times” is a way for the faculty to show students the important role communications has in society.
