St. Bonaventure celebrates graduates at 163rd Commencement Exercises

Beloved friar Fr. Dan Riley honored with doctorate

Dr. Jeff Gingerich, university president (right), and Dr. Joseph Zimmer, provost and vice president for academic affairs, honor Fr. Dan Riley, ofm, with an honorary doctorate.




Fr. Dan at the podiumHe came to St. Bonaventure in 1960 to major in biology with dreams of a career in medicine. More than 60 years later, he was honored by his alma mater for opening more hearts than any doctor ever has.

Fr. Dan Riley, O.F.M., the charismatic face of St. Bonaventure for more than 50 years, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters at St. Bonaventure University’s 163rd Commencement Exercises Sunday, a day that saw more than 800 students receive bachelor's or master's degrees.

“One of the good things (about St. Bonaventure) is that we look each other in the eye and get to know each other,” said Fr. Dan, a member of SBU’s Class of 1964. “If you don’t remember anything else, remember my love for you.”

Ayushi Jain and Caroline Rozanski named Ideal Bonaventure Students for the Class of 2023

Ideals for webTwo aspiring physicians – Ayushi Jain and Caroline Rozanski – have been named Ideal Bonaventure Students for the Class of 2023.

Jain, of Princeton, New Jersey, is a public health major with minors in biology and philosophy, and Rozanski is a health science major from Washington, Michigan.

Deandre Allen of Jamaica, New York, and Nikolas Figueroa of Bronx, New York, were selected as honorable mention Ideal Students. Allen is a strategic communication major with a marketing minor. Figueroa is a music major and computer science minor.

Two students address classmates at Commencement

Student Speakers Richard Vara and Valentina Cossio SilesFor the first time, graduation ceremonies included two student speakers: graduate speaker Richard Vara from Houston, Texas, and senior Valentina Cossio Siles from Seminole, Florida.

For the first time in school history, St. Bonaventure graduated more graduate students (421) than undergraduate (406).ve a Master of Arts degree in digital journalism, and Valentina Cossio Siles, an accounting and finance double major from Seminole, Florida, who will receive a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

ROTC cadets commissioned as second lieutenants

Nely commissioned second lieutenants join forces to slice a cake after the ceremony.Graduating seniors who served as cadets in the U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at St. Bonaventure University were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army on Friday, May 12.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the university’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, was followed by the Silver Dollar Salute, a traditional event in which each newly commissioned officer hands a silver dollar to the first soldier who salutes them. Cadets choose someone who was instrumental in their upbringing, education or training for this honor.

Professors Hoffmann and Brown honored by peers

Hoffmann and Brown with Gingerich for webApril 28 — Two St. Bonaventure University professors have been honored by their colleagues with awards of excellence for the 2022-23 academic year.

Dr. Pauline Hoffmann, associate professor of communication, was awarded the Professional Excellence in Community Service Award, while Dr. Adam Brown, professor of elementary education, was awarded the university’s Professional Excellence in Teaching Award.
