New research on inclusive playrooms for Marshallese children

In September, Dr. Margaret Hindman, assistant professor of Counselor Education, published “Creating a child-centered playroom for Marshallese children” through Qeios.

Hindman, MargaretQeios is an open science platform that allows anyone online to access research and for reviews of the research to be public. Its transparent approach combines AI and human expertise to evaluate submissions, making research more accessible to a wider audience.

As of September, the article has been viewed 847 times and downloaded 269 times. It has an average peer-review of 3.42 out of 4, with reviewers from both national and international communities. This article provides readers with a discussion of historical and current issues for Marshallese individuals in America, suggestions for steps to create a culturally inclusive playroom for Marshallese elementary students, and recommendations for specific toys to use in the playroom and child- centered group play therapy documentation. Additionally, Hindman was invited to submit proposals for the Alachua County Crisis Center’s virtual mental health symposium, Crisis to Connection, for Suicide Prevention Month. In September, she presented a 30-minute intervention presentation called “Visualizing Change: The Therapeutic Power of Bridge Drawing” and a 50-minute presentation called “Working with Children to Set Compassionate Limits.”
