Finance professor examines how global trade shapes growth

Dr. Janhavi Shankar Tripathi, assistant professor of finance, has published a new paper titled “International Trade and Economic Growth in the Era of Geoeconomic Fragmentation” (with Dr. Dominick Salvatore, Fordham University) in the Journal of Policy Modeling.

Tripathi, Janhavi Shankar TripathiThe study examines 132 countries between 2017 and 2023 and finds that while trade remains crucial for economic growth, it increasingly acts as a facilitator rather than a direct driver. In advanced economies, exports support capital formation and growth, while in developing countries, industrialization plays a central role in boosting trade-led growth.

The paper also warns that rising protectionism and global trade disruptions may weaken these links, underscoring the importance of strategic industrialization and trade partnerships in today’s fragmented global economy. Read more at  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpolmod.2025.06.017.
