Bonnies bounce back, bury Auburn at hockey nationals

Mar 06, 2025

Sure didn’t take long for the Bonnies to bounce back.

Just a day removed from squandering a 3-1 lead after two periods to Fairfield, St. Bonaventure’s club hockey team jumped all over Auburn, scoring five first-period goals en route to a 9-1 win today in game two of pool play at the AAU College Hockey Nationals in Jacksonville, Florida.

Eight different players scored for the Bonnies, led by Jake Spina with two goals. Michael Clouden and Presley Schiltz scored less than 3 minutes into the game and the Bonnies dominated the rest of the way.

St. Bonaventure led 5-0 after the first period and 7-0 after the second. Carson Schlager, Michael Robertson, Landon Kramer, Nathan Sobko and Francis Zaklukiewicz also scored for SBU, who outshot the Tigers, 35-22. Defenseman Sam Chiavetta added two assists.

The No. 7 Bonnies (14-9-1) face No. 2 Tampa at 8 p.m. Friday, the final day of pool play in the 16-team tournament. The game will be streamed here.

The Bonnies can still advance out of pool play if they beat Tampa and Fairfield loses to Tampa (today at 8 p.m.), but they’d need to win a three-team tiebreaker to do so.

Fewest goals allowed in the tournament is the first tiebreaker if the three teams are 1-1 vs. each other. After that, tournament goal differential is the next tiebreaker, followed by fewest penalty minutes.

SBU can also advance by beating Tampa if Fairfield loses to Tampa tonight and Auburn on Friday. Head-to-head would be the first tiebreaker in that case.

The four pool winners will play semifinal games at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The championship game is at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
