SBU's Strasser co-edits book that explores 'Narrative in Crisis'

Mar 15, 2024

Dr. Irene Strasser, assistant professor and Psychology Department chair, together with Dr. Martin Dege of Pratt Institute, co-edited a book titled "Narrative in Crisis: Reflections from the Limits of Storytelling," published by Oxford University Press:  https://global.oup.com/academic/product/narrative-in-crisis-9780197751756?cc=us&lang=en&

The volume gathers prominent scholars to explore crisis narratives. It delves into autoethnographic and biographical perspectives, examining the interplay of knowledge, uncertainty, and collective experiences in crises, specifically the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

What did we learn from the Spanish flu? How well do experts and journalists understand what those numbers are supposed to signify? How unparalleled is the unprecedented experience for individuals who have experienced war, sieges, and previous pandemics? And finally, will we ever learn to live with the virus?

The book chapters investigate levels of the individual, academic work, and society, and highlight stories of the unknown or yet-to-be-known by making them accessible through thorough reflection, pushing back the all-too-simplified stories we hear in everyday discourses.

All contributors to the volume (Strasser, Dege, Mark Freeman, Dan McAdams, Corinne Squire, Hanna Meretoja, Luka Lucić and Guro Nore Fløgstad, Ruthellen Josselson, Michel Ferrari and Melanie Munroe, Molly Andrews, and Jens Brockmeier) will be present for a virtual book launch at 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 27, on Zoom.
