Smith opinion piece published in counselor education newsletter

Feb 24, 2022

Dr. Nate Smith, assistant professor of counselor education, was recently invited to contribute an opinion piece for the Texas Association of Counselor Education and Supervision's spring newsletter.

The piece, titled "Refuting Queer Misery: Reframing How We Think About 'At-Risk' Queer Youth," is a critique of counseling researchers, scholars, and practicing counselors' characterization of "at-risk" queer youth and how it inadvertently promotes heteronormativity through promoting a narrative of "queer misery."

The newsletter is widely distributed to counselor educators and supervisors throughout the state of Texas.
