Simpson and 2021 chemistry grad publish research article

Oct 07, 2021

Dr. Scott M. Simpson, associate professor of chemistry, and Jonathan P. Antle, who earned his B.A. in chemistry from SBU in 2021, have published a research article titled "Increasing Confidence in Unknown Identification in Wastewater and Surface Waters."

It was published in ACS Publications' ES&T Water in a collaborative research effort with those in the research group of Dr. Diana Aga at University at Buffalo.

In this study, wastewater and surface water samples from three locations in Manila, Philippines, were analyzed for contaminants of emerging concern (CECs).

This study demonstrates the importance of using tools and software that are helpful for reporting detections of CECs according to a standardized classification system. The detection of several CECs in wastewater and surface water samples show the importance of performing nontarget analysis in determining occurrence of CECs in the environment.
