Dr. Aaron Gies, assistant professor of theology & Franciscan studies, has completed a diplomate in manuscript studies from the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS), part of the University of Toronto. 

 

The Institute of Mediaeval Studies is a postgraduate institution dedicated to producing multidisciplinary scholars and scholarship on the Middle Ages. The oldest humanities research institute in Canada, it was founded in 1929 under the auspices of St. Michael’s College and the Congregation of the Priests of St. Basil (CSB). 

 

Directed by Professor M. Michèle Mulchahey, the manuscript studies program is conducted in Toronto and Rome and includes instruction in paleography, codicology, diplomatic and text editing. Gies’s diplomate thesis, completed under the supervision of Professor Timothy B. Noone of the Catholic University of America, studied the prologues of seven early 13th century commentaries on John’s gospel, several of which remain unedited. The thesis therefore involved significant manuscript work.
