WEST CHESTER, Pennsylvania, March 20, 2022 — Mason Meggo and Owen Hughes scored twice as St. Bonaventure defeated 2nd-seeded SUNY-Farmingdale, 7-5, Sunday night to advance to the medal round of the national Collegiate Hockey Federation Cup.
The 15th-seeded Bonnies (20-2) capped a day that saw the top four seeds in the tournament eliminated. They’ll play Binghamton, winners of Pool G, at 2:45 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals.
“The feeling is better than I can describe,” said Taylor Rosenberg, coach of the Bonnies. “Farmingdale has been one of the top teams for a long time and there weren’t a lot of people who would have believed we could score seven goals on them.”
St. Bonaventure, winners of 15 in a row, dominated the first period, scoring twice, including a goal from Jake Spina on a 2-on-1 pass from Meggo with just 3 seconds left in the period.
But the Bonnies took several penalties in the second period, resulting in two power play goals for Farmingdale. When Matthew Hawkins scored back-to-back goals in less than 2 minutes midway through the period, the game was tied.
However, Mike Rappa scored late on a power play 4 minutes later to give SBU a 5-4 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Goalie Nick Filipowicz made a huge save on a Farmingdale power play with just 2 seconds left in the second and continued his stellar play in the third period, making several clutch saves throughout as the Bonnies got insurance goals from Owen Hughes and Meggo.
Farmingdale outshot the Bonnies, 36-25, over the last two periods, and 40-38 for the game.
“Nick stood on his head that entire game,” said Taylor Rosenberg, coach of the Bonnies. “We wouldn’t have won that game without him. And I have to mention (forward) Sam Cichowski. We voted him the MVP of the game. He just worked his butt off the entire game.”
Brady Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for the Bonnies with a power play goal.
Coupled with their 9-4 win over East Carolina Friday and their 9-1 win over Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday, the Bonnies finished pool play 3-0.
