Parker Suddeth, coordinator of the Damietta Center for Multicultural Student Affairs at St. Bonaventure, said the inaugural Leadership Summit will bring students from all backgrounds across the region to connect on issues of equity, action and leadership.

“Students will be given the opportunity participate in dynamic breakout sessions that will speak directly to issues they face regionally and nationally,” said Suddeth.

Presentations will lay the foundation for this year’s theme of “Equity, Leadership & Activism: Finding Your Voice.” The topics will speak directly to:

  • Navigating student activism as a student of color in the 21st century
  • Social justice in higher education
  • Student leadership among minorities at historically white institutions
  • Microaggressions: Tell me how you really feel

Dr. Yvonne Minor-RaganDr. Yvonne Minor-Ragan, an influential leader and citizen of Buffalo, particularly on education and public policy, will be the keynote speaker. Minor-Ragan retired Dec. 31, 2015, as president of Buffalo Promise Neighborhood, an initiative that supports the neighborhood’s two schools and a newly constructed early childhood center, while working to transform the surrounding community.

Now president of YMRagan Consulting, LLC, Minor-Ragan serves on the Board of Trustees at St. Bonaventure University and the Board of Directors at The John R. Oishei Foundation.

ALL BONAVENTURE READS

St. Bonaventure University has selected “Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen” by Jose Antonio Vargas as its All Bonaventure Reads (ABR) book for 2019-2020.

Dear America book cover“Dear America” tells the story of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas and his journey through life as an undocumented immigrant in the United States. With passion and ambition, Vargas expresses what it means to be an illegal citizen in a time where fear for being deported is at its highest.

The book also allows readers to stand in Vargas’ shoes and understand life’s biggest difficulties when becoming a legal citizen is no longer an option.

As part of the All Bonaventure Reads initiative, first-year students at St. Bonaventure will receive a copy of “Dear America” during Orientation and be asked to read the book and write an essay reflecting on it as their first college assignment. Students will be engaged in conversations about the book’s themes in their first-year seminar course, SBU 101, and various campuswide events during the upcoming academic year.
