St. Bonaventure University’s Emily Sion has been named to the inaugural National Small College Rugby Organization All-American team.
A political science major from Springville, N.Y., Sion was one of only four sophomores named to the All-American team for the 2017-18 season. Sion plays inside center and scored 15 tries this season for the Bonnies.
“Emily is one of the toughest players I’ve ever known and I couldn’t be more proud,” said Bonnies Coach Clarence Picard. “No one challenges me more to be a better coach.”
Sophomore-to-be Kelly DeGrood was in Chula Vista, Calif., from June 28 to July 1 at the Olympic Training Center trying out for the Women’s Junior All-American team.
A marketing major and fly half from Orchard Park, N.Y., DeGrood was among 34 women invited to the camp, which was held to identify a roster for the WJAAs upcoming two-match series scheduled for later this summer. DeGrood also scored 15 tries season, plus 71 points off the kicking tee.
“Training with some of the best players in the country was a great opportunity for Kelly,” added Picard. “We’re excited to see how she grows from the experience.”
Sion and DeGrood previously represented the Bonnies in January, playing for the Upstate NY All-Stars at the NSCRO 7s All-Star Championship in St. Petersburg, FL.
