St. Bonaventure students embark on Grand Italian Tour in Sorrento, Italy

Jul 8, 2022

Thirteen St. Bonaventure University students embarked July 3 on the journey of a lifetime to study along the glistening Amalfi Coast in Sorrento, Italy.

sorrento class Program creator and director Anna Bulszewicz is thrilled to return with SBU students, considering the program hasn’t run since summer 2019. Bulszewicz partners with colleagues at Sant’Anna Institute to create a memorable academic journey that includes mobile lectures, which incorporate Italian history and culture into the students’ living and learning experience.

Rather than staying in traditional dorm-style rooms, St. Bonaventure students live in apartments in the town of Sorrento. Each apartment is based around Piazza Tasso, which serves as the town square in Sorrento. This style of living adds another layer of cultural immersion as they are able to simulate living on the Mediterranean for five weeks as Italian citizens.

Guided lectures through the region will include an exclusive and formal visit from members of the U.S. Consulate based in Naples, a tour of historic Pompeii, and a cooking lecture and tasting with Michelin Star chef Peppe Aversa from the world-famous Il Buco restaurant. Students will also enjoy a boat and land lecture along the Amalfi Coast that mimics the famous 17th century Grand Tour.

This year, rising junior Elizabeth Egan and rising senior Marnique Olivieri-Panepento earned journalism internships with the Positano News. The two students will practice journalism in a foreign country, applying what they’ve learned in the Jandoli School of Communication.

Students will also enjoy a weekend away in Rome, which includes an educational tour of the historic city centre.

This year the program welcomes recent St. Bonaventure MBA graduate Tyler Carro as its assistant director.

The program runs through Aug. 6. Follow along with your fellow Bonnies as they embark on their Grand Tour this summer on Instagram, @studysorrentoSBU, where highlights from the Sorrento experience will be shared.
