Honors students to get $500 scholarships if accepted into SBU’s summer Oxford program

Nov 13, 2019

St. Bonaventure Honors students accepted into the university’s Oxford program will receive $500 scholarships starting in summer 2020.

“We want to do everything we can to encourage our best students to take advantage of this remarkable opportunity,” said Michael Jones-Kelley, director of SBU’s Francis E. Kelley Oxford Program at Trinity College and a lecturer in the Jandoli School of Communication.

Students typically take two courses during the six-week summer program, taught by a mix of St. Bonaventure and Oxford professors. Grades and credits are recorded just like any other classes, Jones-Kelley said.

Additionally, SBU’s Honors Council has voted to include two courses offered by the Oxford program as Honors-designated courses.

“This allows Honors students to satisfy their requirements, experience a wonderful study abroad, and receive $500 to help offset some of the costs,” said Dr. Adam Brown, director of the Honors Program and professor in the School of Education.

“Working with the Oxford program has been a pleasure,” Brown said. “Their generosity is a testament to both the efforts to recruit some of Bonaventure’s top students, and also to the collegiality among programs.”

A typical Oxford program schedule includes four days each week in classes and “learning communities,” with three-day weekends reserved for field trips in England or travel in Europe.

The program includes trips to explore London, Stonehenge, the beautiful and ancient city of Bath, and the studio where the Harry Potter movies were filmed.

St. Bonaventure’s 2020 Oxford program runs from July 3 to Aug. 14.
