St. Bonaventure University will become a smoke-free campus, effective July 1.

“In considering the recommendation of our Student Government Association and the significant majority of campus community members who supported the idea in a survey, I’ve decided that becoming smoke-free is the right thing to do,” said Dr. Dennis DePerro, university president.

The university has for years prohibited smoking indoors — including in university-owned vehicles and all residence facilities — and within 30 feet of entrances to buildings. Starting July 1, smoking will be also be prohibited in all outdoor areas on the main campus property.

The prohibition applies to all smokable products, including but not limited to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and vaping.

“This decision is a difficult one. We have a number of highly valued members of our community who do smoke,” DePerro said. “But in considering the greater good of the entire university community, I think the time has come to become smoke-free.”

Almost 50 percent of colleges and universities in New York state have established smoke-free or tobacco-free policies.

St. Bonaventure’s SGA recommended to the president last fall that the university adopt a smoke-free policy, and a survey of the campus community indicated that more than 70 percent were in favor of a smoke-free policy.

The prohibition applies to all events held on the university’s main campus grounds or property, and applies to all members of the university community (faculty, staff and students), as well as anyone who visits campus.
