Quick Center for the Arts honors high school artists

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University honored 75 young, local artists at its annual High School Juried Art Exhibition on Wednesday, March 27.

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University honored 75 young, local artists at its annual High School Juried Art Exhibition on Wednesday, March 27.

Works were selected for the exhibition from more than 200 submissions after an extensive jurying process by professional judges.

Participating schools included Allegany-Limestone Central School District, Andover Central School, Belfast Central School, Bolivar-Richburg Central School, Cassadaga Valley Central School, Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School, Coudersport Jr.-Sr. High School, Ellicottville Central School, Falconer Central School, Jamestown High School, Oswayo Valley Central School District, Otto-Eldred High School, Pioneer High School, Wellsville High School, Wellsville Secondary School, and West Valley Central School.

Winners, their families and friends, were honored with an exhibition opening and reception.

In addition to their works being selected for exhibition at the Quick Center, Ludwig Brunner, executive director of the Quick Center, and Dr. Joseph E. Zimmer, university provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, presented four students with Best of Category awards and professional grade art supplies:

  • Best of Drawing, Jillian VanHouten, 11th grade, Jamestown High School (art teacher: Brandy Fuller) for her NuPastels and colored pencil drawing “Little Brother;”
  • Best of Painting, Meghan Brink, 12th grade, Allegany-Limestone Central School (art teacher: Theresa Heinz) for her collage – oil paint & ink on paper painting “Harry;”
  • Best of Photography / Digital Art, Connor Majewski, 11th grade, Wellsville High School (art teacher: Mark Corwine) for his digital graphic “Bust;” and
  • Best of Sculpture / Ceramics, Leah Sims, 11th grade, Pioneer High School (art teacher: Scott Losi) for her sculpture “Ocean’s Ago.”

Bernard Valento, vice president for enrollment at the university, presented three students with St. Bonaventure Best in Show awards. Each award included a $1,000 scholarship to attend St. Bonaventure University, a professional artist portfolio, and art supplies to help the students continue their artistic endeavors.

The winning students are:

  • Isabelle Kozak, 10th grade, Pioneer High School (art teacher: Renee Wrotniak) for her digital photograph “Drenched;”
  • Lashante Thomas, 10th grade, Cassadaga Valley Central School (art teacher: Joy Russo) for her charcoal pencil work “Still Life;” and
  • Morgan Spinks, 12th grade, Oswayo Valley Central School District (art teacher: Lynzie Rinamon) for her ceramic work “Wisdom.”

The winning works of art will remain on view on the mezzanine of the Quick Center through Monday, April 22. The Quick Center is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Holiday and summer hours vary.
