Sixty-five students from six area schools participated Saturday in the annual Challenge 24 mathematics contest at St. Bonaventure University.

The contest is hosted each year by SBU’s Department of Mathematics and is directed by Angela Colomaio, adjunct instructor, and Dr. Christine Uhl, assistant professor.

The participating schools included: Allegany-Limestone Middle School, Hinsdale, Olean Intermediate-Middle School, Allegany-Limestone Elementary, East View Elementary and Washington West Elementary.

In Challenge 24, contestants are presented with four numbers between 1 and 9. The object is to combine the numbers, using each number exactly once, to produce an answer of 24.

Any of the standard arithmetic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division — may be used as needed, perhaps more than once, to get the result.

Medals were awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place students in each of five grades:

Third grade

  • First: Sushanth Kondur (Allegany-Limestone Elementary)
  • Second: Brian Bergstrom (Hinsdale)
  • Third Place: Elizabeth Bailey (Washington West)

  • Second: Lokesh Anumalasetty (Olean Intermediate Middle School)
