Transit Middle School earns top awards at math contest hosted at St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure University hosted the regional phase of the 2019 MATHCOUNTS competition, a national contest for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students, on Feb. 9.

Contestants worked individually and in four-person school teams on questions designed by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the main sponsoring organization.

The five schools competing, along with their coaches, were Allegany-Limestone Middle School (Kathy Stamets), Southern Tier Catholic School (Kazi Ahmed), Transit Middle School, Casey Middle School, and Heim Middle School (Matthew Goehrig).

Locally, the contest was financially supported by St. Bonaventure University and an anonymous grant. 

The top school team and the top individuals received trophies. The teams have been invited to the New York state competition to be held in March at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. The top individuals from the state contest will advance to the national competition in May.

Top Individuals:
First place – Grant Wang (Transit Middle School)
Second place – Ming Yang (Transit Middle School)
Third place – Eric Liu (Transit Middle School)

Top School:
First place – Transit Middle School (Matthew Li, Eric Liu, Grant Wang, Ming Yang)

Other organizations providing financial support for the contest at the national level include CNA Foundation, Phillips 66, US Department of Defense, Northrup Grumman Foundation, Raytheon Company, Texas Instruments, 3MGives, Art of Problem Solving, NextThought, and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
