SBU-TV to air on Spectrum network in Western New York

Feb 7, 2019

Students pursuing a career in broadcast journalism in the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University will soon be seen throughout the Buffalo-Niagara metropolitan area.

“SBU-TV,” a weekly, student-produced newscast, will soon be available to television viewers across Western New York. Starting Sunday, Feb. 10, “SBU-TV” will air on Spectrum (Channel 6) in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties every Wednesday at 7 p.m., Thursday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. The broadcast will also extend to viewers in the Buffalo metro area on LCTV (Channel 1301) every Monday at 9:30 p.m., Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

“In the classroom, we treat our students like professional journalists. We expect excellence from them,” said Anna Bulszewicz, lecturer in broadcast journalism in the Jandoli School of Communication. “With our broadcast reaching more and more eyeballs, this only sets the bar higher. A bigger audience is a signal to them that they need to rise to the occasion.”

“SBU-TV” streams live on Facebook each Friday at 10 a.m. and can be viewed at any time on the station’s YouTube page.

“This is an exciting time to be a broadcast student at Bona’s,” said Michael Spong, lecturer in broadcast journalism in the Jandoli School of Communication. “This is the real deal. Students are story planning, researching, producing and broadcasting a live newscast each week that is making an impact throughout our community.”

The Jandoli School of Communication is growing and evolving its broadcast journalism efforts. The school recently invested in new field equipment and enhanced its production facility. Now, a lot more people will see students’ work.

“Having this exposure is huge for our students,” said Aaron Chimbel, dean of the Jandoli School. “Not only does it expand the reach of their work, it also puts them on the same playing field as professional journalists.

“They’re going to thrive in that environment.”
