ESPN’s NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, SBU class of 1991, has been named National Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.

Known for his NBA scoops, or “Woj Bombs,” Wojnarowski is only the 10th person to be honored in consecutive years in the six decades the award has been handed out.

The NSMA, based in Salisbury, N.C., is an organization of more than 1,000 members that honors excellence in the industry. Wojnarowski is the first ESPN media member to win the Sportswriter of the Year honor.

Wojnarowski left Yahoo Sports after nearly 10 years in July 2017 to return to his hometown of Bristol, Conn., to work at ESPN.

Before Yahoo, Wojnarowski wrote for The Record (Bergen County, N.J.), Fresno Bee and Waterbury Republican-American. He is a two-time winner of the Associated Press Sports Editors’ Columnist of the Year award.

Wojnarowski, along with state winners in writing and broadcasting, will be honored at the 60th annual NSMA Awards Weekend June 22-24 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

ESPN basketball analyst Doris Burke became the first woman to be named National Sportscaster of the Year.

Inducted into the NMSA Hall of Fame the same weekend will be Mike “Doc” Emrick, Bob Ley, Peter King and Tony Kornheiser.
