My wife, Mary, and I are proud parents of our sons Andrew and John, who are members of the St. Bonaventure family – Andrew just graduated in May 2017 and John just started his freshman year (Class of 2021). I graduated with my MS from SBU in 1979.
I would like to invite you to give serious consideration to Bona’s during your college search process.
When I wear my “Once a Bonnie Always a Bonnie!” T-shirt that my sons gave me, I get many shout-outs, thumbs-up and smiles from Bona alumni, Bona parents and Bona friends who see it, even in faraway states. There’s a deep connection we all feel to SBU and to each other.
Andrew and I visited many different schools with varying student-body sizes and city-rural locations during his junior and senior years of high school. Our family had always been involved in camping and Boy Scouts of America, so naturally he was drawn to the peace of the woods and rural areas. This was solidified when he visited the beautiful campus and discovered the many terrific opportunities at SBU in the Enchanted Mountains.
We were happy he chose SBU. We thought it would be a good fit for him and a place that would enrich his life. The 17-year-old boy who started there has grown into an impressive young man committed to his community, and he strives to reach his full potential. Three weeks after graduation he accepted a job offer and is now working as a sales administrator in upstate New York.
Andrew’s SBU experience became a family affair. John came with us when we attended Andrew’s freshman orientation, great Family Weekends, and saw some high-spirited basketball games in the Reilly Center. He would come home and tell his friends about visiting his brother at college.
When it came time for John to find a college, equipped with a number of good college acceptance offers with scholarships, he set off to visit universities to find his place. His friends would always say to him, “I don’t know why you are looking at other schools; we all know you are going to Bonaventure. That’s all you ever talk about!”
When visiting other universities something just didn’t feel right. It was hard to put into words but the family and caring community feeling just wasn’t the same as it was at Bonaventure. John is majoring in finance and accounting and is excited to join the SBU rugby team.
As a parent, I can say positive things about St. Bonaventure! SBU is very welcoming, very cheerful and a very safe place. Every Bona student can find opportunities to grow personally, academically, athletically and socially through many programs, services and experiences.
Our appreciation of the dedicated faculty and staff and of the good spirit of SBU remains strong. Both my sons and I will enjoy a lifelong connection to SBU as members of the SBU Alumni Association — an amazing family unto itself.
If you are looking for a university that gives your son or daughter more than just a degree, please consider SBU, where the experiences of community, discovery and individual worth are also gained. I hope you visit St. Bonaventure University and discover the many ways it can be the right place for your child and family.
