As a parent, I cannot say enough about St. Bonaventure! Bona’s is a very welcoming place; a very upbeat place; a very safe place. Every Bonnie student can find opportunities to grow personally, academically, athletically and socially through an array of programs, services and experiences.
When I drive down the road, I get many honks, thumbs-up and smiles from Bona alumni and Bona parents who see the St. Bonaventure decal on my car window. There’s a deep connection we all feel to this special place and to each other, since making lifelong friends at Bona’s is a tradition!
Having grown up on Long Beach Island, N.J., Kevin was a bit hesitant about applying to a college located in Western New York. He could not envision himself being away from home and from the ocean. That quickly changed when he visited the beautiful campus and discovered the many terrific opportunities at SBU. He was accepted to several other good colleges, but conversations always led back to Bona’s. When he chose SBU, we knew it would be a good fit for him and a place that would enrich his life. Little did we know that the lives of our entire family would be so enriched as well.
Kevin’s SBU experience became a family affair. We attended his freshman orientation, enjoyed great Family Weekends, and saw some very spirited basketball games in the Reilly Center. Our connection to Bona’s, to the dedicated faculty and staff, and to other Bona families grew stronger each year. And, we were all amazed at how quickly the four years had gone as we attended his graduation.
When Pat looked at colleges, his sights were already on this special place he knew well. He explored other options, but sent his deposit to Bona’s the day after his acceptance letter arrived. As he said, “Why look any further? I know Bonaventure is where I want to be.” Like Kevin, he enjoyed four great years and grew into a more confident young man.
As a high school senior, Brian was already comfortable with Bona’s. My wife and I reminded him to consider other colleges. His passion is surfing, so we thought he would choose a school closer to the ocean. We couldn’t have been more wrong. He couldn’t wait to get to Bona’s. He’s a strategic communication and digital media major and fulfills his surfing passion by snowboarding at nearby Holiday Valley ski resort. Brian chose Bona’s not because of his brothers, but because it has all he wants and needs in a college.
Eventually, the three brothers will enjoy a lifelong connection to this special university as members of the SBU Alumni Association — an amazing family unto itself.
I hope you visit St. Bonaventure and discover the many ways it can be the right place for your family.
