University to pay tribute to veterans

Nov 07, 2017 |

St. Bonaventure students and staff will participate in a number of events this week to pay tribute to veterans.

On Tuesday, members of the Student Veterans Association and cadets from the ROTC Seneca Battalion talked with students at Franklinville Elementary School about what it means to be a good citizen. On Wednesday, cadets will lower and raise the U.S. flag at JCC-Olean’s Veterans Day Ceremony, and on Thursday, the ROTC Color Guard will present the National Colors at Archbishop Walsh Academy’s ceremony that honors Walsh alumni who gave their lives in Vietnam.

St. Bonaventure will host its Veterans Day ceremony Friday, Nov. 10, to recognize and celebrate all St. Bonaventure alumni who are veterans. The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Room of the McGinley-Carney Center for Franciscan Ministry on campus. (The ceremony was moved inside because of inclement weather predictions.).

A Veterans Day ceremony is always held at St. Bonaventure

Because this is the only ceremony honoring veterans during the academic year, fallen veterans will be remembered as well. The Color Guard will raise a new national flag in honor of servicemen and women and remarks will be given by Student Veteran Association leadership; Lt. Col. Sean Coulter, professor of military science; and senior university leadership. The public is invited to attend.

On Saturday, the Campus Activities Board is inviting St. Bonaventure students to stop by Café La Verna between 5 and 7 p.m. to write letters to veterans and enjoy dessert.

Also Saturday, the ROTC battalion is supporting three events by presenting the National Colors at the Cuba Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by the VFW at Genesee Park, a Houghton College cross-country meet, and the Allegany American Legion.
