Architect’s talk part of ‘House and Home’ exhibition at Quick Center

Oct 17, 2013 |

Architect Tamara Hilmey will present a lecture Monday, Oct. 21, as part of the ongoing “House and Home” exhibition at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

Tamara HilmeyThe talk, “Building the American Dream,” will be at 4 p.m. in the Loft, a third-floor gathering space in The Quick Center. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The House and Home exhibition, drawn from the flagship installation at The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., explores the varied history and many cultural meanings of the American home and how our ideal of the perfect house and our experience of what it means to “be at home” have changed over time.

Hilmey will present a historical overview of what it means to be at home in America and explore construction techniques and methodology, cultural impacts and the sustainable aspects of building our homes.

Hilmey is a licensed architect with a private practice, PLYWOODstudio, located in Allegany. She is certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a nationally accepted organization for design, operation and construction of high-performance green buildings.

She has a wide range of architectural experience in Ohio and New York on various residential, educational and commercial projects. With a focus on sustainability, she has coordinated two LEED registered projects, including the award winning $13 million 4-H Center at her alma mater, The Ohio State University.

Hilmey earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture at The Ohio State. She has taught there and at St. Bonaventure as an adjunct professor.

The program is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities’ On The Road program in conjunction with St. Bonaventure’s Franciscan Center for Social Concern and Clare College.

The “House and Home” exhibition is at the Quick Center through Oct. 21. Quick Center galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public year round.
