Jandoli Institute logo“The panelists will use their expertise and experience to discuss today’s political landscape, how we got here and what lies ahead,” Jandoli Institute Executive Director Richard Lee said.

Boston University Associate Professor Edward Downes and WKBW-TV political analyst Robert McCarthy will join Lee on the panel.

At Boston University, Downes is an associate professor in the Department of Mass Communication, Advertising & Public Relations. He also is an affiliate to the College of Communication’s Doctoral Program in Emerging Media Studies, and he directs the Master’s in Advertising Program at the university’s Metropolitan College. A final manuscript of his book, “The Politics and PR of Capitol Hill’s Image Makers: The Role of the Congressional Press Secretary,” is under review by Bloomsbury Publishing.

McCarthy covered politics for the Buffalo News from 1992 until he retired in 2023. While at the News, he covered all major elections in New York state and Western New York, 14 national conventions, and he was named by Brill’s Content magazine as one of New York’s 10 most influential political journalists. In July, he joined WKBW-TV in Buffalo as a political analyst.

Lee is a professor in the Jandoli School of Communication, where he teaches a Media and Democracy course, as well as an honors class on political campaigns. Before joining the St. Bonaventure faculty in 2011, he covered government and politics in New Jersey and later held several government positions, including deputy communication director for two governors.

All three panelists are St. Bonaventure graduates.
