Sociology students attend Olean court proceedings

Sep 25, 2019 Dr. Samantha GavinOn Tuesday, Sept. 24, the SOC 301 section 002 class went to the Olean City Court. Visiting Professor Dr. Samantha Gavin said the students observed criminal court proceedings, allowing them to gain an understanding of how misdemeanors are handled, the roles each court official plays, and how they work together throughout this process. They also had a question-and-answer session with the judge and the district attorney for that court. In October, this class will be touring the Cattaraugus County Jail in Little Valley, New York, and the Allegany County Jail in Belmont, New York, so they can see how jails are run and gain an idea of how jail size changes the way it functions.
