St. Bonaventure University students have presented on unified sports at state conventions in the past, but this year the group will do back-to-back presentations at the annual NYSAHPERD Convention in November.
The theme for the Nov. 15 New York State Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention is “Teachable Moments: Passionate-Engaged-Enlightened.”
The students will partner with Special Olympics New York to give presentations on the collaborative programs with local unified sports teams conducted at St. Bonaventure.
Student officers of the university’s Physical Activity Club (PAC) majoring in physical education, sport studies and health science, under the guidance of Dr. Paula Scraba, associate professor in physical education, will first collaborate with the Amsterdam High School unified basketball team for an engaged sport demonstration, “Unified Sports: Enlightening Schools through passionate engagement of Sport.”
The second presentation will be a coaches panel featuring the SBU students, Nate Johnson, director of Unified Sports for Special Olympics New York, Jessica Byerwalters of Amsterdam High School, and Todd Nelson, president of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
In addition, Scraba noted that a St. Bonaventure student will be recognized as a recipient of a J.B Nash Outstanding Major Award during the convention.
