Here we highlight special demonstrations performed by the Chemistry faculty for chemistry students, the campus, and the community beyond.
At the end of the school year, Dr. David Hilmey takes his organic chemistry class outside to prepare for the final exam.
Each year, Dr. Jerry Godbout gives an outdoor demonstration of the vigorous thermite reaction between iron (III) oxide and aluminium.
Dr. Godbout begins by explaining the nature of the thermite reaction to a curious crowd.
He then prepares the reaction as the students and faculty watch.
The thermite reaction creates a bright green flame, sets the can on fire, and soon...
...eats through the container. Kids, don't try this at home.
Once a month, Dr. Hilmey visits the Sonshine Preschool in Allegany and presents a science experiment or demonstration for the children. The Director of Sonshine, Pat Spaeth (wife of Paul Spaeth, Director of Friedsam Library) and Dr. Hilmey wanted to introduce the preschoolers to science. The idea is to show the prechoolers the wonders of science and of the natural world, rather than teaching a conventional science lesson. The experiments and demonstrations are designed to reinforce the children's innate curiosity for the world.
