Keeping the community working


A series of three workshops aimed at providing Olean-area residents with the skills needed to enter the workforce and become vital contributors to the regional economy.

This series of three Foster Center workshops is intended to help those entering the workforce or navigating their way to new employment acquire skills to make themselves more valuable and marketable.

Each of the workshops will be held on the St. Bonaventure University campus and also available remotely via the Zoom teleconferencing platform. All presentations will be held at 2 p.m., and each is free and open to all, although registration is required. Registration links can be found below.

Navigating the Job Market


Presented by John B. Stevens, lecturer of management in the School of Business at St. Bonaventure and owner/operator of JB Stevens Organizational Solutions.

This session focuses on what to do when entering or moving about the job market, covering such things as resume writing, applying for a job, interviewing, legal issues, internet searches and more.

Workshop 2

Resources Available on the Web


Don Watkins Presented by Don Watkins, educator, writer, social entrepreneur, and free and open-source software advocate.

This workshop will address the resources available on the web to help people remain computer literate. Among the topics to be discussed will be:
  • cybersecurity
  • secure messaging applications
  • password managers
  • online learning
  • free software suggestions
Watkins is a leading author for opensource.com. His specialties include Linux and open-source software in education, technology planning, writing about open-source software and digital literacy training.

Watkins earned a Master of Arts in educational psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and Master of Science in Education in educational leadership from St. Bonaventure. He has also earned school building leader and school district leader certifications. He is a member of Pi Lamda Theta International Honor Society for Education.

Workshop 3

Honing Your Excel Skills


Anne FoerstPresented by Dr. Anne Foerst, professor of computer science at St. Bonaventure and director of the university's individualized major program.

This workshop is for people who want to improve their skills using Excel, the Microsoft spreadsheet software. Topics will include:
  • Excel basics: How to format a worksheet and numbers
  • creating charts and tables
  • using the IF and VLOOKUP functions
  • loan amortization
In addition to bachelor's degrees in computer science, philosophy and theology, Foerst earned a master's in theology from the University of Bonn in Germany and a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Bochum, Germany.

Her interests include religious and ethical questions about artificial intelligence and robotics.
